Why this area is different
Everywhere in the Prescott Active Management Area is losing groundwater. Williamson Valley is losing it fastest, and it has the least to lose.
The reason is position. Toward the edges of a groundwater basin, the saturated thickness above bedrock is thinner. A three foot drop in the center of the basin is a nuisance. The same three feet at the margin can take a well out of water entirely.

By those groups’ reckoning, the fastest drops in the basin are along its northwestern edge, out toward Granite Oaks and west of Chino Valley. Carrying current rates forward, they project that even the deepest wells in the Little Chino aquifer could be dry before 2050. That is an advocacy-group projection rather than a state forecast, and what matters for your own well is the gap between your static water level and your pump setting.
New home building in the area combined with drought has driven levels down, making it harder to find wells that produce enough water to meet demand.
What failure looks like before it arrives
Wells rarely stop all at once. They degrade, and the early stages get misread as pump problems.
Pressure falls off under sustained use, then recovers. The well is drawing down faster than it refills. See low or dropping water pressure.
Air comes through the taps. The pump is periodically drawing air as the level reaches the intake. See air spitting or sputtering from faucets.
The pump runs and runs without building pressure. It cannot lift water that is not there. See pump runs constantly or short cycles.

The expensive mistake at every one of those stages is buying a pump. A new pump set at the old depth reproduces the problem the day it goes in.
The three numbers to get
Ask any contractor on site to measure and write down:
- Static water level today. Where the water sits with the pump off.
- Pump setting depth. How far down your pump hangs.
- Total well depth. How much room is below the pump.
Number one minus number two is your margin. Number two minus number three is your room to lower the pump.
If you do not have the drilling record, Arizona Department of Water Resources maintains a well registry and it is worth requesting yours.
Options, roughly by cost
Lower the pump. Cheapest, if there is water below and space above the sediment layer. Buys time.
Add storage. A cistern lets a slow well fill a tank over many hours while the house draws from the tank. This is the most commonly overlooked option and often the right one out here, because it converts a low-yield well into a workable supply. It does nothing for a well that is genuinely dry.
Deepen the existing well. Depends on construction and what is underneath.
Drill new. Basin-fill drilling costs commonly run $30 to $60 per foot. Note that new exempt wells in the Prescott AMA require careful review, and the five dry holes drilled by a provider north of Prescott are a reminder that drilling here does not guarantee water.
Haul water. A real and current fallback in this area. Households here already do it.

Why is the aquifer margin worse than the center?
Because the water column is thinner there. Toward the edges of a basin there is simply less saturated thickness above the bedrock, so a given drop in water level removes a larger share of what is available. The same decline that is inconvenient in the center of the basin is terminal at the margin.
What can I do if my well is failing?
In rough order of cost: lower the pump if there is water and space below it, add storage so a slow well can fill a tank over hours, deepen the existing well, drill a new one, or haul water. Storage is the most commonly overlooked and often the most practical for a well that still produces but produces slowly.
Should I be measuring something now, before there is a problem?
