Air spitting or sputtering from faucets
Of all the well symptoms, this is the one most likely to be about the aquifer rather than the equipment.
Air spitting from faucets on a well system means air is entering somewhere. The most common causes are a pump drawing air because the water level has fallen to it, a leak on the suction side of a jet pump, or naturally dissolved gas. If water runs normally for a while, then sputters and stops, then recovers after several hours of rest, the water level is the likely cause.
Three sources of air
The pump is drawing air. The water level in the well has fallen to or below the pump intake, so it pulls a mixture of water and air. This is the serious one and the one most relevant around Prescott.
A leak on the suction side. Only applies to jet pumps, which pull water up rather than push it. Any crack or loose fitting between the water and the pump lets air in, because that side of the line is under vacuum. A leak there may never drip, since it draws air in rather than pushing water out.
Dissolved gas. Groundwater can carry dissolved gases that come out of solution when pressure drops at the tap. This produces cloudy water that clears from the bottom up, not sputtering. It is a curiosity rather than a problem.

This symptom is more likely to be about the aquifer around Prescott than it would be in most places.

What not to do
Do not keep running it. A pump cycling air overheats. Submersible pumps rely on water moving past the motor to cool it. Running one dry is a reliable way to destroy it.
Do not assume a new pump fixes it. If the water level is the problem, an identical pump at the same depth reproduces the problem immediately.
Do not ignore it because the water still mostly works. Intermittent air is usually the early stage of something that gets worse.

Why is air coming out of my faucets?
Air is getting into the system somewhere. The three main possibilities are the pump drawing air because the water level has fallen to or below it, a leak on the suction side of a jet pump, or gas naturally dissolved in the water coming out of solution. The first is the most consequential.
Is air in the lines dangerous?
The air itself is not a health hazard. What it can damage is the pump, because a pump running dry or partly dry overheats and fails. Persistent air is a reason to act rather than to wait.
Does sputtering mean my well is going dry?
It can, and in this area that possibility is worth checking rather than dismissing. The characteristic pattern is water that runs fine for a while, then sputters and stops, then works again after the well has rested for several hours.
Could it just be after some plumbing work?
Yes. Air introduced during repairs works its way out over a day or two of normal use. If sputtering started right after work was done on the plumbing or the well and is fading, that is likely all it is.
What is the difference between air and milky-looking water?
Water that looks cloudy or milky and then clears from the bottom of the glass upward is dissolved air, and it is harmless. Air that arrives as sputtering bursts at the tap, pushing water out in spurts, is a different symptom and points at the pump drawing air.
