The most useful local data on private well water here comes from a study of 47 wells. Here is what it found.
A 2026 Arizona State University study tested 47 private wells in Yavapai County across 75 variables. Hardness was the most common problem, with 45% exceeding EPA limits. Arsenic appeared in 11%, turbidity, sulfate and fluoride in 10% each, and uranium in 3%. It is a small county-wide sample, so it indicates what is common locally rather than predicting any individual well.
The findings
Researchers from Arizona State University tested 47 private wells in Yavapai County for 75 variables, covering first-line indicators, salts, biologicals, and metals. They presented the results at the Cottonwood Community Clubhouse on 22 May 2026.

What this data is, and what it is not
Being precise about this matters, because well water statistics get mangled constantly.
It is the best recent local sampling available for private wells in this county, from a research institution, covering a wide variable set.
It is not a Prescott-basin survey. Yavapai County is large and geologically varied. Wells were sampled county-wide, and groundwater chemistry in the Verde Valley differs from the Little Chino aquifer.
It is not a large sample. Forty-seven wells is enough to indicate what is common. It is not enough to build a probability for your address.
It does not tell you anything about your well. Arsenic in this region is geological, leaching from the rock the water passes through, which is why two wells a mile apart can return very different numbers.
A correction worth making
There is a claim circulating that more than 40% of Yavapai County wells exceed the EPA arsenic limit.
That is false. It merges the 45% hardness exceedance with the 11% arsenic finding from this same study. Hardness and arsenic are different substances with different consequences: one costs you a water heater, the other is a health standard. Conflating them roughly quadruples the apparent arsenic problem.

What each finding actually means for you
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. Not a health risk. It scales water heaters, shortens appliance life, and leaves film on everything. It is also the most straightforward to treat. See water softener installation.

Turbidity is suspended particles. Often a sign of a well screen, casing, or pump setting issue, and it interferes with disinfection. See cloudy, sandy, or gritty water.
Sulfate affects taste and can have a laxative effect at high concentrations. Also associated with the sulfur smell some wells produce.
Fluoride occurs naturally in Arizona groundwater. Beneficial at low levels, a health concern above the EPA limit.
Uranium is present in Arizona groundwater and the study noted it as non-radioactive and common statewide. Still a health standard worth measuring against.
What the study does not cover
Two tests every well owner should run regardless, which a variables panel like this does not substitute for:
Total coliform and E. coli. Bacterial contamination indicates a compromised well cap, seal, or casing. This is the most time-sensitive result on any well test and it should be annual.
Nitrate. Relevant wherever there are septic systems, livestock, or farmland, which describes much of Chino Valley and Paulden.
Municipal numbers do not apply to you
City of Prescott municipal water is reported at 75 to 130 ppm hardness, which is 4.3 to 7.6 grains per gallon.
That number gets quoted at well owners regularly and it is irrelevant to them. It describes treated municipal supply from a different source. If you are on a private well, the only number that describes your water is your own test.
What to do with this
Test. That is genuinely the whole recommendation.
The findings above tell you which results are plausible enough to look for. They cannot tell you what you have. And the contaminants with actual health standards attached are precisely the ones you cannot detect without a lab.
