Cloudy, sandy, or gritty water
Sand is abrasive. It shortens the life of everything it passes through, so this one is worth chasing down.
Sand or grit in well water usually comes from a failing well screen, a cracked casing, or a pump set too close to the bottom of the well. It is abrasive and it wears out pumps, valves, and pressure tank bladders. Cloudy water that clears from the bottom of the glass upward within a minute is just dissolved air and is harmless. Grit that settles at the bottom is sediment and needs to be traced.
First, work out which one you have
Fill a clear glass and set it on the counter.

Where sand comes from
A failing well screen. The screen keeps formation material out while letting water in. Corroded or damaged, it stops doing that.
A cracked or corroded casing. A breach lets material in from the surrounding formation, and it is also a contamination pathway, which makes it the most concerning cause on this list.
The pump set too low. Sediment naturally accumulates at the bottom of a well. A pump sitting in that zone pulls it in. This can develop over time as sediment builds up, or after a pump is reset deeper to chase a falling water level.
Overpumping. Drawing water faster than the formation can deliver pulls fine material along with it.
A new or recently serviced well. Some sand after drilling or well work is normal and typically settles within days or weeks.
Why this connects to falling water levels here
There is a specific local chain worth understanding.
Groundwater in the Chino Valley area has fallen for decades, typically 80 to 100 feet deeper for a well drilled 50 years ago. When the water level drops, one common response is to lower the pump to stay in water. That moves the pump closer to the sediment at the bottom of the well.

What it damages, in order
- The pump. Impellers wear first. This is why a sandy well often produces a pump that loses pressure years earlier than expected.
- The pressure tank. Sediment settles inside and abrades the bladder.
- Valves and the pressure switch. Grit stops seats sealing properly.
- Water heater. Sediment accumulates in the bottom of the tank and reduces efficiency.
- Fixtures and appliances. Aerators, cartridges, dishwasher and washing machine inlet screens.
What to do
Do not just add a filter and move on. A sediment filter protects the house, which is worth having, but the pump is upstream of it and is being worn regardless. Filtration is part of the answer, not all of it.
Get the water tested. Turbidity is worth quantifying, and if the cause is a compromised casing, a bacteria test matters. A 2026 Arizona State University study of 47 Yavapai County private wells found 10% showing turbidity. See well water testing.
Have the well itself looked at. Screen condition, casing integrity, pump setting depth, and sediment depth at the bottom. Some companies can camera the well, which answers most of these questions directly.
Ask about pump setting. If the pump is sitting in the sediment zone, raising it may solve the problem, provided there is enough water above it to do so.

Not by itself. Turbidity is a physical property rather than a contaminant. It does matter for two reasons: it can interfere with disinfection, and it can indicate a compromised casing or seal, which is a route for other things to enter.
