Low or dropping water pressure
Low pressure everywhere means something different from low pressure at one fixture.
Low water pressure on a well is most often a clogged sediment filter, a pressure switch set low, a waterlogged pressure tank, or a worn pump. Check the filter and the pressure gauge first, because those are cheap and common. Pressure that dropped gradually usually means a filter or scale. Pressure that dropped suddenly usually means the switch, the tank, or the pump.
Sudden versus gradual
This is the first question worth answering, because it splits the causes cleanly.

Everywhere, or one fixture
One fixture only is a plumbing problem rather than a well problem. A clogged aerator, a failing supply valve, or a cartridge in that fixture. Fix it there.

Only hot water points at the water heater, often scale buildup on the tank or a failing dip tube. Work through it in order
1. The sediment filter. If you have a whole house filter, this is the most likely cause of a gradual decline and the cheapest to rule out. Change the cartridge and see what happens. In an area where a 2026 ASU sample found 10% of wells showing turbidity, filters load up.
2. The pressure gauge and switch. Watch the gauge through a full cycle. Standard settings are 30/50 or 40/60 psi. If the pump cuts out at 40 when it should reach 50, either the switch is set low, the switch is failing, or the pump can no longer build to the cutout pressure.
3. The pressure tank. A tank with no air charge causes rapid cycling and unstable pressure. Tap it: solid all the way up means waterlogged. See pressure tank replacement.
4. Valves. A main shutoff or a valve at the tank that got bumped partly closed is not a rare thing.
5. Check valve. A stuck or failing check valve at the pump or in the line causes pressure loss and can let water drain back down the well.
6. The pump. Worn impellers lose the ability to build pressure. Sand accelerates that wear considerably. By this point the diagnosis needs amp readings and flow measurement.
7. Water level. If pressure falls off during heavy use and recovers after a rest, the well may not be keeping up with the pump.
The local possibility worth keeping in mind
Pressure that degrades under sustained use, then recovers after the system rests, can mean the well is drawing down faster than it refills.
That pattern is worth taking seriously here. Groundwater in the Chino Valley area has fallen for decades, typically 80 to 100 feet deeper for a well drilled 50 years ago, and domestic wells on the western side of Chino Valley and along Williamson Valley Road have gone dry. If your pressure problem tracks with how much water you have used rather than with time of day or a specific fixture, that is a meaningful clue.

Common questions
Is low pressure the same as low flow?
No, and the difference is diagnostic. Pressure is the force behind the water and shows on the gauge. Flow is how much arrives per minute. A well can have good pressure and poor flow, which usually points at a restriction or a well that cannot keep up. Describing which one you have helps a lot.
Can I just turn up the pressure switch?
Sometimes, within limits. Switch settings are commonly 30/50 or 40/60 psi, and adjusting to the higher pair is a legitimate fix if the system and pump are rated for it. It is not a fix when the real problem is a failing pump, a clogged filter, or a dropping water level, and raising the setting in those cases just makes the pump work harder.
Why is pressure worse when more than one tap runs?
That is usually a flow limitation rather than a pressure problem. Either the pump cannot deliver enough gallons per minute for simultaneous use, the well itself cannot supply the pump fast enough, or something in the plumbing is restricting the volume.
Could a water filter cause low pressure?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes people overlook. A sediment filter that has done its job is by definition partly blocked. If pressure dropped gradually over weeks and you have a whole house filter, check the cartridge before anything else.
Does low pressure mean my pump is failing?
Not necessarily. Worn pumps do lose the ability to build pressure, but so do a bad pressure tank, a stuck check valve, a clogged filter, a partly closed valve, and scale in old pipes. The pump is one candidate among several.
