Well pump repair

When the taps run dry, the pump is only one of about six things that could be wrong. Here is how the fault gets found.

Well pump repair in the Prescott area means finding which part of the system actually failed, then fixing that part. A technician checks the breaker, pressure switch, pressure tank, and control box before touching the pump, because those failures are more common and far cheaper. Only when the above-ground components test good does the pump come out of the well.

What actually failed when you have no water

The pump gets blamed for everything. It is often innocent.

A private well system has a chain of parts, and a failure anywhere in that chain produces the same symptom at your kitchen sink. Working from the cheapest and most common toward the most expensive:

What failedTypical symptomWhere it sits
Tripped breaker or blown fuseNothing runs, no sound at allElectrical panel
Pressure switchPump will not start, or will not shut offOn the pipe near the tank
Waterlogged pressure tankPump cycles on and off rapidlyUsually a garage or well house
Control box or capacitorPump hums but does not pumpWall near the tank, on some systems
Broken or shorted wirePump is dead, breaker may tripDown the well casing
The pump itselfNothing, or runs but delivers no waterBottom of the well
Water level below the pumpPump runs, delivers air and then nothingThe aquifer rather than the equipment

That last row matters more here than in most of the country. In parts of Chino Valley and Williamson Valley, groundwater levels have dropped far enough that a working pump can be left hanging above the water. See falling groundwater and what it means for your well.

How a technician narrows it down

Start at the panel. A breaker that trips immediately on reset points at a short, often in the wire or the pump motor. A breaker that holds means the fault is downstream.

Test the pressure switch. The switch tells the pump when to run. Burned or pitted contacts stop it from calling for the pump at all. This is a common failure and an inexpensive part.

Check the pressure tank. Tap it. A tank that sounds full all the way up has lost its air charge, which makes the pump cycle rapidly and eventually kills it. See pressure tank replacement.

Read the amp draw. Clamping the pump wires while the pump tries to run tells a technician a lot. High amps suggest a bound pump or motor. Zero amps points at a wiring break or a dead control box.

Ohm the drop wire. Resistance readings taken at the top of the well can identify a shorted or open wire down the casing without pulling anything.

Pull the pump last. Only when the above-ground tests come back clean does the pump come out. That is a truck, a reel, and often two people.

If a company arrives and immediately quotes a new pump without doing any of this, get a second opinion. See how to choose a well pump contractor.

What repairs cost

Above-ground repairs are the affordable end of well work. The expensive jobs are the ones requiring the pump to come out of the ground.

RepairWhat drives the price
Pressure switchPart is inexpensive; usually a single short visit
Control box or capacitorPart cost plus diagnosis; above ground, so no pulling
Pressure tankTank size and whether the plumbing needs rework
Drop wire replacementRequires pulling the pump, so depth drives the cost
Pitless adapterExcavation at the wellhead adds to it
Full pump replacementDepth, horsepower, and pipe condition

National cost aggregators put 2026 well pump replacement at roughly $1,500 to $2,827 on average, with depth adding about $500 to $1,000 per 100 feet. A submersible in a 200 foot well runs about $1,800 to $3,000, and a 400 foot well can reach $4,000 to $6,000 or more.

Depth is not a small factor here. Vendor-published figures put average well depth at about 280 feet in Chino Valley, 300 feet in Prescott Valley, and 320 feet in Prescott, with the Big Chino area around Paulden ranging 280 to 400 feet. Treat those as general ranges rather than a quote for your well.

The well pump repair cost guide breaks this down further.

Repair or replace

Some of this is a judgment call, and an honest contractor will talk it through rather than default to the bigger job.

Repair usually makes sense when the failed part is above ground, when the pump is relatively young, and when the well itself is in good condition.

Replacement usually makes sense when the pump has already been pulled for another reason, when the motor has failed after many years of service, or when the pump is undersized for a water level that has dropped since it was installed. If the truck and crew are already on site with the pump out of the hole, replacing a marginal pump costs far less than pulling it again in two years.

What to have ready when you call

It shortens the visit and it sometimes changes the diagnosis:

  • Whether you have no water at all, or reduced pressure
  • Whether the breaker has tripped, and whether it trips again on reset
  • Any sound from the well house or tank area
  • Roughly how old the pump is, if you know
  • Well depth and pump setting depth if you have the drilling record
  • Whether anything changed recently, such as a new appliance or a power event

Common questions

How do I know if it is the pump or something else?

You usually cannot tell from the tap. No water can come from a tripped breaker, a failed pressure switch, a waterlogged pressure tank, a burned control box, a broken wire down the well, or the pump itself. A technician tests these in order from cheapest to most expensive, because the cheap ones are more common. Pulling the pump is the last step rather than the first.

Can a well pump be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?

Above-ground parts are usually repaired. Pressure switches, control boxes, capacitors, wiring, and pitless adapters are all replaceable on their own. A submersible pump that has failed electrically or mechanically after years down the well is normally replaced rather than rebuilt, because the labor to pull it is the same either way.

How long does a well pump repair take?

An above-ground fix like a pressure switch or control box is often the same visit. Anything that requires pulling the pump depends on depth and access, and on whether the replacement part is in stock. Ask for a time estimate before work starts.

Is a well pump failure an emergency?

If you have no water at all, most local companies treat it as urgent and several advertise same-day or 24-hour service. If you still have water but the pump is behaving oddly, it is usually worth scheduling normally and describing the symptom accurately.

Should I try to pull the pump myself?

No. A submersible pump in a 300 foot well hangs on pipe, wire, and a safety rope, and the assembly is heavy and awkward. Dropping it turns a pump job into a well rehabilitation job or a new well. This is the part of the work that needs the right truck.
