That agricultural history matters here for a specific reason: the Little Chino aquifer beneath the valley has been pumped for a long time, and it shows.

Groundwater levels throughout Chino Valley continue to decline and have been falling for decades. Local water-advocacy groups, including the Citizens Water Advocacy Group, put the fastest drops along the northwestern edge of the basin, out toward Granite Oaks west of town.

Domestic wells, meaning the small exempt wells most households have, feel this earliest. They tend to be shallower than production wells, so a falling water table reaches them first.

Where you sit in the basin matters

Chino Valley is not one hydrological situation. The center of the basin has more water column above the bedrock than the edges do.

What this changes about pump work

Standard pump advice assumes you replace like with like. Here that assumption needs checking every time.

Sizing. A pump sized for the water level of the 1990s may be undersized now. Lifting water further takes more work.

Setting depth. If the water level has dropped below the old pump setting, putting the new pump at the old depth means it runs dry immediately.

A 2026 Arizona State University study tested 47 private wells across Yavapai County and found 45% exceeded EPA limits for hardness, 11% showed arsenic, and 10% each showed turbidity, sulfate, and fluoride. That is a small county-wide sample rather than a Chino Valley survey, so use it to know what to test for.
